David Maller Tenor Sackbut
Design and Construction
- The Tenor Sackbut in Bb is a large bore instrument of Renaissance design
- Wall thickness is .35mm, thinning to .28mm at the bell
- The bore diameter is 11.9 mm with a bell opening of 12.7 cm
- Flat, hinged bell brace and telescopic, tubular slide brace
- Inner slide is nickel and has stockings
- Instrument is not lacquered and has no water key
- The tuning mechanism is at the connection of the bell and slide sections
- The bell garland, braces and furules are extensively ornamented and
engraved in Renaissance style.
Mouthpiece
- The timbre and response of any brass is determined by the mouthpiece as
well as, the instrument itself
- For the above reason, we include with the Maller sackbut a copy of an
original mouthpiece dating from the seventeenth century
- It has a flat rim and hemispherical cup with a sharp drop into a wide
throat
Case
- A high quality case has been specifically designed for this instrument
Options
- Option 1: The instrument can be provided with a set of tuning bits
(the historical tuning method) instead of the tuning slide usually
furnished.
- Option 2: A half step crook is available for playing at Baroque
pitch (A=415). The tuning bits and half step crook insert at the mouthpiece.
- Option 3: We also offer an F crook which inserts between the slide
and the bell sections. As shown in the Mersenne's Harmonie Universelle
(1636), this crook is a means of turning a tenor sackbut into a bass.
